The Arts - Woodworking

The woodshop program allows Middle Schoolers to work with their hands, to create from raw materials a finished functional product. They learn about shop safety and rules and gain knowledge of cutting with saws, drills and planes. They have the experience of assembling, finishing, designing and doing the layout of their projects.

The focus in fifth grade is on design technology – techniques of structure, support, measurement and assembling. Sixth-graders produce a box container and a small utilitarian object. Seventh grade students make a toy and a small utilitarian object, while eighth graders design and produce a small piece of furniture.

The Upper School offers an Arts III elective that allows the student to explore designing to produce a major piece of furniture, as well as creating smaller pieces of complex visual art designs. These projects may range from bowl-turning to large tables.
