Robotics Competition at MFS Tomorrow - Spectators Welcome!

Moorestown Friends School (MFS) will be hosting a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) qualifying competition on Saturday, December 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Robotics teams from 27 schools in New Jersey and Pennsylvania are scheduled to compete. This includes three MFS teams. Spectators are welcome to attend and, according to MFS Robotics Advisor Tim Clarke, competition should get under way around 10:30 a.m. after preparation and inspection of equipment.

FTC is designed for those who want to compete head-to-head, using a sports model. Teams of up to 10 students are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. The robot kit is reusable from year-to-year and is programmed using a variety of languages. Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for the competition as for well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments.

Students get to design, build, and program robots, apply real-world math and science concepts, develop problem-solving, organizational, and team-building skills, compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments, earn a place in the World Championship and qualify for close to $7 million in college scholarships.

FTC competitions take place throughout March 2011. The FTC World Championship will be held in St. Louis in April.

Country Dancing in AP English

The Germantown Country Dancers, in full period costume, visited MFS on Tuesday to teach Debra Galler's AP English students Jane Austen-style English country dancing as part of their unit reading Pride and Prejudice. Click on the video at right for a sneak peek at the dancing fun that took place in the Practice Gym.

A Thanksgiving Feast in Preschool

Preschool celebrated Thanksgiving by sharing, washing, cutting, scooping and eating a delicious fruit salad--a healthy and memorable feast. The children helped class parent Lina Patel to wash the fruit, cut it up with kid-friendly knives, and scoop it into the growing fruit salad. Then one very long table (much like the first Thanksgiving) was set with tablecloths and flowers to create a special atmosphere. The children set their turkey placemats (which they had created earlier in the week) at their seats. The children found some favorite fruits on their plates and many tried some fruits they weren’t sure they would like. We even had a few members of the clean plate club!
