MFS Mock Primary Election is Tuesday, January 10
Parents Welcome to Attend Remarks and Closing Ceremony

Student candidates are in the final stretches of their campaigns in preparation for the MFS Mock Primary Election, which will take place on Tuesday, January 10.

Keynote speaker at the event will be Michael Smerconish, the nationally syndicated radio host, best-selling author and weekly contributing columnist to The Philadelphia Inquirer. Smerconish’s radio show is broadcast weekday afternoons in Philadelphia on WPHT-AM (1210).

In addition, United States Congressman and MFS parent Jon Runyan will lead a workshop for Upper School students at 11:30 a.m. Also leading workshops will be Capitol Hill insider Judith R. Wallner ’95, who has worked at Emily’s List, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, The Strategy Group, The Atlas Project, and on a number of local and federal campaigns. She is currently working for the U.S. Senate.

The student candidates are Newt Gingrich (sophomore Dante Bucci), Jon Huntsman (junior Joe Kiernan), Ron Paul (senior Kyle Whittall), Rick Perry (senior Doug Adair) and Mitt Romney (freshman Brett Barbin). Freshman Brian Pansius, who represented Herman Cain until he dropped out of the race, will now be presenting to students about third-party candidates. Students in grades 5-12, faculty and staff vote in the mock election. In addition to selecting a Republican candidate, voters will also weigh in on selected hot-button issues: nuclear power, a soda tax and the possibility of the U.S. joining the International Criminal Court.

MFS has held mock campaign events every four years since 1960. Through researching candidates and issues, running campaigns, and voting, students learn about the political process, see how they can get involved, and come to understand the impact they can have on our nation. From 1960 to 1996, MFS held Mock Political Conventions which typically featured the party that was out of power at the time. Since 2000, MFS has held Mock Primaries. To mirror the real election, if an incumbent president is running, the school only holds a primary for the other party. Therefore in 2012 the school is holding only a Republican primary.
