100 YEARS OF FRIENDS SOCCER COMPETITION CELEBRATED

On Saturday, September 26, three high school soccer teams will meet on a playing field to continue a rivalry that began in November 1909. Germantown Friends School (Philadelphia, PA), Friends Select School (Philadelphia, PA) and Moorestown Friends School (Moorestown, NJ) played each other one hundred years ago in their first interscholastic soccer games. Today, they continue to compete against each other as members of the Friends Schools League.

The centennial celebration will take place at Germantown Friends School’s fields beginning at noon. A parade will feature ten decades of soccer players: alumni, current athletes, and young future stars. A ceremonial soccer ball will be presented by team captains to the head of each of the three schools.

League competition begins at 1:15 p.m. when the girls’ varsity teams from Germantown Friends and Moorestown Friends face off. At 1:30 p.m., the historic meeting of the boys’ teams from Germantown Friends and Friends Select will get underway. (Girls’ soccer began at each school several decades after 1909.)

Former players and coaches will join current athletes and fans for an afternoon of celebrating – but the competition is real. Germantown Friends School playing fields are located at 2807 Midvale Avenue (near Wissahickon Ave.) in the East Falls section of Philadelphia.
