MOORESTOWN FRIENDS MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS PLACE FIRST IN REGIONAL SICENCE OLYMPIAD

MOORESTOWN, NJ – Fifteen Moorestown Friends Middle School students have placed first in a regional science competition and are looking forward to competing in the state Science Olympiad in March. The team was selected for the state finals, which will take place March 14 at Middlesex Community College, based on their results in the Southern Regional Competition held Jan. 14 at Camden County College.

Among the 15 events at which the Moorestown Friends School students succeeded was identifying chemical substances, determining the drinkability of water, designing a model building and answering questions relating to global warming.

The Science Olympiad has been recognized by the National Research Council as a model program in the teaching of national science standards.

It was the second time a Moorestown Friends School team had participated in the event, which tests students’ ability to apply scientific principles to real world situations. The team’s first place finish in the regional event was especially impressive given that many of those they competed against were experienced teams of students up to and including ninth-graders.

Middle School Science Teachers Chuck Blatherwick and Deborah Carter-Bruvik helped to prepare the students for the event. They were aided by Moorestown Friends School Science Teachers Drew Newman and Tim Clarke.

A complete list of students participating in the event follows.
