2005 Strategic Plan Update
Spiritual
and Ethical Growth
- Curriculum development for new initiatives in critical
thinking, ethical education and resiliency, including:
- In-service presentation for faculty on Examined Life
and Critical Thinking.
- Examined Life presentations to NJAIS and California
conference.
- Critical Thinking programs researched at other nationally
known schools.
- New worship and ministry committee for Upper School
students.
- Chester Reagan Chair becoming a 12-month position.
Academic
Rigor
- SAT prep course offered to all juniors.
- PSATs administered to sophomores as well as juniors.
- National French Exam program reestablished.
- Foreign language program review under way; completion
by June 2005.
- Lower School Spanish teacher added in Fall 2004.
- Young alumni surveyed on their academic preparation
for college.
- Student course feedback forms instituted in Middle and
Upper School.
- Numerous MFS presentations at NJAIS "Best Practices"
Conference in October 2004.
- Additional foreign language faculty budgeted for 2005-06.
- Study group being formed to examine Advanced Placement,
International Bacca;aireate, and other accelerated programs
in context of possible schedule changes.
- Social Studies department completes pilot project in
Learning by Design in Upper School.
- Nearly 200 faculty observations completed by the Head,
Academic Dean, Division Directors and Department Chairs
during the first and second trimester.
Diversity
- 37% of new students at MFS in 2004 are students of color.
- Two faculty members trained in California to become
SEED leaders.
- Five students participate in NJ Anytown student diversity
program.
- Special assembly and worship sharing around presentation
on diversity and inclusion.
- Percentage of faculty of color increased.
Service
Learning
- Service learning focus for 11th grade Intensive Learning
activities – two new service trips added.
- New service learning course with Samaritan Hospice for
Upper School students.
- New Lower School/Middle School service coordinator budgeted
for 2005-06.
Schedule/Planning
Time
- Work in this area to be examined by the Academic Rigor
group.
Technology
- New Academic Technology Coordinator position created
and filled.
- Network servers upgraded and over 100 new computers
added.
- Faculty technology training workshops provided.
- Pilot program in use of SmartBoard technology.
Compensation/Benefits
- Consultant John Littleford spent a week at MFS working
with faculty issues.
- Three study groups formed to study compensation, benefits,
and evaluation.
- New mentoring system established for new faculty members.
Physical
Plant
- Comprehensive campus master plan development under way
by architecture firm; completion summer '05.
Fiscal
Planning
- Market analysis completed in August 2004.
- Consultant Mark Edwards working with ad hoc committee
to produce Marketing Plan; completion June 2005.
- Annual giving program growing with greater leadership
gift support and more active Development Committee.
