Scholarships

Moorestown Friends School offers three scholarship programs. Learn more about each opportunity, as well as how to apply for them by clicking through the information below.

Each year Moorestown Friends School offers two or three 1785 Founders Scholarships to academically high-achieving new ninth grade students who demonstrate good citizenship and leadership potential. The scholarships are renewable half-tuition awards (a value in 2022-23 of $17,250).

The scholarships are named in honor of the 33 Friends families who pooled their funds to purchase the land and materials necessary to build the original stone schoolhouse (pictured at right) which opened in 1785. The purchase price using the currency terminology of the day was 112 pounds, 3 shillings, and 2 pence — the equivalent of $1,003.09.

About the DeCou Scholarship

The DeCou Scholarship is funded by the estate of Tom and Wilda DeCou. Tom DeCou graduated from Moorestown Friends in 1930, and he and his wife Wilda had seven children who graduated from MFS. The DeCou family was well-known as fruit growers in South Jersey in the middle part of the 20th century. Tom and Wilda served on the MFS Board of Trustees, and Tom was active in the Moorestown Friends Meeting, New Jersey Farm Bureau, and New Jersey Horticultural Society. Tom also served on the Farmland Preservation Study Committee for Moorestown Township in the 1970s.

The Camden Scholars Program at MFS has a long tradition of providing unique opportunities to students from Camden City Schools entering grades 7 and 9. Recommended by guidance counselors, candidates apply to Moorestown Friends School, attend classes, and are interviewed. Once selected by the Camden Scholars Committee and admitted, students receive scholarships that provide virtually full tuition to MFS.

Students are provided with an extensive academic and social support network while attending Moorestown Friends School. Students at MFS are encouraged to pursue their interests and develop their talents through clubs, leadership training, athletics, and performing arts.

More than 100 Camden Scholars have earned MFS diplomas and moved on to attend some of America’s most selective colleges and universities.

Camden Scholars Director Chanelle Walker ’01 and Coordinator Justin Spencer-Linzie ’10 serve as liaisons to help participants adjust to their new learning environment and sustain a healthy and successful academic and extracurricular schedule.
