Where is the Library located?
The Woodward Henry Diller Memorial Library is located in Stokes Hall, a three-story building connecting the Lower School to the Middle/Upper School. It’s situated near the science facilities, computer laboratories, and administrative offices. Originally constructed in 1988, the Library was completely renovated in the summer of 2003.
When is the Library open?
The MFS Library is open from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, students and faculty are able to access many online library resources 24/7 on myMFS, using a special password from the Library Staff.
Who works at the Library?
The Library Staff: Mrs. Reilly, Mrs. Alterman, and Mrs. Griffis. They can provide pencils and paper, help you find the perfect book to read, or assist with the computer programs you use. If you need help with your research, just ask, because they know a lot about the books and databases that make up the school library.
When are books due?
Our library does not charge fines for overdue books. We expect that students will return them when they are finished reading them or using them for research. That said, Lower School students’ library books are due during the following Library class period; Middle School students’ books are due two weeks from checkout; and Upper School students’ books are due three weeks from checkout. A book can usually be renewed, unless someone else has requested it. Reference materials and other special materials can be checked out at the end of the school day and should be returned before school the next day.
Wow! The Library doesn’t charge overdue fines?
That is correct: the school does not charge you for overdue library books. You may renew your books by stopping at the circulation desk and asking — you don’t need to bring your books in to renew them. At the end of the school year, if any of your books are permanently missing or lost, you will be charged the replacement cost so that another student may read the book next year.
Does the Library have audiobooks?
Yes, the Library has a collection of audiobooks and Playaways (books on MP3 players) that can be checked out by Middle and Upper School students. The librarians have also tried to obtain an unabridged audiobook of every book read by the English Department. Students can find these materials through the OPAC (online catalog).
Where can I check out a laptop?
Check with Library Staff at the desk or in the offices in order to borrow a Library laptop. These special laptops are for “in-school” use only.
Where can I check out a camera or video camera?
Digital cameras, video cameras, card readers, and tripods are available at the circulation desk for you to use during the school day.
Am I allowed to use the copy machine?
Yes, the Library copier is available for students to use for academic work.
Will you tell other students which books I’ve checked out, or why?
No. Libraries respect confidentiality and are committed to protecting a person’s right to borrow and read whatever they would like.
Can you help me decide which books to read?
Yes! The Library Staff are trained researchers who have studied books all their lives. Talk to a librarian about what kinds of books you like to read, and she will help you find something new.
