On May 11, seven Upper School students danced in Langhorne, PA at The Power of Dance competition, a unique performance platform that uses dance to raise money for non-profit charitable organizations. The MFS Dance Team’s submissions helped to raise a total of $1800 for five unique charities. A particular highlight for the team was raising $370 for “The Beautiful Scar Project,” which brings awareness and aid to parents suffering from stillbirth and miscarriage. On top of their efforts to give back to others in need, the Dance Team won a number of awards at The Power of Dance as well.
The “Burning” contemporary featuring Lizzie Huettl ’19, Jordan Brunner ’19, Jenna Rosenthal ’20, and Bella Dunn ’21 received one of eight special judge awards out of 75 dances performed at The Power of Dance. The award recognized the group’s exceptional storytelling skills through dance. This dance also received First Place Overall in the senior division for small groups.
The “MFS Hip Hop” dance including Lizzie Huettl ’19, Lizzie Cohen ’19, Jordan Brunner ’19, Jenna Rosenthal ’20, Liah Morban ’21, Annabelle Crescenzo ’21, and Bella Dunn ’21 received Third Place Overall in the senior small group division.
A hip hop choreography dance entitled “Old School Pop” by Lizzie Huettl ’19 and Lizzie Cohen ’19 received First Place Overall for senior division dances.
Jenna Rosenthal ’20 won First Place Overall for senior solos for her “Remedy” lyrical dance. Jenna also earned an invitation to The Power of Dance National Competition and a scholarship.
Drama/Theatre Director and Dance Team advisor Angela Wertner shared her enthusiastic congratulations to all of the dancers for their hard work and dedication. “To say I am proud of our team’s accomplishments would be an understatement. Mostly I am proud of their kind demeanor and stand-up sportsmanship representing our team at The Power of Dance this weekend. Onward to our second and final competition.”
The US Dance Team will compete on May 19 at the National Dance Showcase in Mount Laurel, NJ.
