Emergency Financial Aid Application Process

While there is no specific deadline for returning these documents, please know that the Emergency Financial Aid Fund is a limited resource. If you wish to apply for the fund, please do so as soon as possible. If you have questions, please reach out to Director of Admissions and Financial Aid Shu Shu Costa at scosta@mfriends.org.

Here’s how to begin:

1. Gather the following documents to fill out the financial worksheet:

      1. IRS Form 1040 for 2019 tax year and the 2020 tax year, when complete
      2. W-2 and IRS Form 1099 for 2019 and 2020
      3. Last paycheck stub for those who lost their job due to COVID-19
      4. Schedule C or C-EZ for 2019 and 2020
      5. Corporate taxes for 2019 and 2020, and other supplemental documents such as your K1, 1065, or 1120
      6. Current balance sheet or profit & loss statement for businesses that have closed due to COVID-19

2. Access School and Student Services (SSS) by clicking on this link: https://sss.secure.force.com/familyportal

3. Create an SSS Family Portal account using your email address and a password.

4. Complete and submit the application form, or Parent Financial Statement (PFS).
For an application filed for the 2020-2021 school year, please change the drop down year to 2020-2021. Then, estimate your 2020 income – as best as you can – and input it into the 2019 column. Repeat that number in the 2020 column. Because this system is not intended for mid-year applications, we are asking you to put the 2020 information in both of these columns. See the graphic below.

If you are filing for Emergency Financial Aid for the 2021-2022 school year, please fill out the worksheets and then complete the additional steps below.

5. Upload the following documents into SSS as they pertain to your individual situation. Please note: If these items are unavailable, we will work with you to determine the best way to confirm your financial need.

    1. Your most recent pay stub.
    2. A letter from your employer regarding a furlough or layoff.
    3. A determination letter from the state unemployment division.
    4. A profit & loss statement from your business(es) showing the impact of any closures, reduced income, etc.

6. If you haven’t already, email (scosta@mfriends.org) a detailed narrative describing your specific circumstance. This will be used by the Financial Aid Committee to understand your specific situation. Please include:

      1. Your current financial situation and how it has changed from your pre-COVID-19 circumstance.
      2. An estimate of how long it might take for your current financial situation to improve.
      3. An estimate of the amount of temporary funds you might need to weather the situation, and any other information that might be helpful to the Financial Aid Committee.

Thank you!
