A Recap of the 2019 Soul Food Fest

Jan 6, 2020

Soul Food Fest is an event run by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Club on the last day before Winter Break. Upper School students and teachers come together in the D’Olier room, eat traditional soul food and potluck dishes, and share in each other’s company.

This year’s Soul Food Fest took place on Friday, December 20. MLK, Jr. Club advisor Sonia Guzman ’02 shared a recap of the event:

“Seniors Joaquin Estevez, Franyeli Peralta, Calvin Bell and Jasmine Phillips, our club officers, led the way in recruiting volunteers to donate food, serve, and run the delivery service to faculty who couldn’t attend but wanted to eat. Every MLK club member got on the line to serve when rush hour started – the Upper School lunch crowd is no joke. So many students, so many choices and always, always service with a smile.

“I am in awe of the way our community of students, teachers, staff and parents came together to provide dishes made with so much heart and soul. Soul Food Fest provides students an opportunity to collaborate beyond the classroom, learn time management, and gives them a chance to step into roles and responsibilities they may never have had before. It took all of us to make Soul Food Fest a success and I know it’s a testimony to the way MFS values community. Unity… that’s what food made with soul is all about.”
