First Grader Captures State Chess Championship

Liam Jesunas ’34 (pictured at right), representing MFS, went a perfect 5-0 to win the First Grade section of the 2022 New Jersey K-12 Championship on November 20, earning his first State Championship title. Liam had his face painted from his 2-year-old cousin’s birthday the night before and told his mother “I can’t lose. I am a superhero” and luckily that turned out to be the case. Almost 500 students gathered at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft for the event.  

Liam takes lessons localy at the South Jersey Innovation Center in Mount Laurel with International Chess Federation (FIDE) Master Dov Gorman and also takes lessons online with Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, New York Times Chess Columnist and social media celebrity. Liam is one of top ranked scholastic players in the nation for his age and has represented the United States in several international events.
