AP US History Students Welcome Defense and Foreign Policy Advisor Sophia Lalani

Jun 8, 2021

After having taken the AP exam, AP US History students in Upper School Director Noah Rachlin’s class recently welcomed Sophia Lalani for a virtual visit. Sophia is Defense and Foreign Policy Advisor to Senator Cory Booker and, in her position, she advises Senator Booker on issues related to national security, foreign policy, military and veteran’s affairs. In her visit, Sophia shared her background and path to this work and then facilitated a conversation with students about a number of issues related to United States foreign policy such as Congress’ Authorized Use of Military Force, the current violence in Ethiopia, and the country’s relationship and competition with China on the global stage. The experience afforded students the opportunity to consider real-world, present day examples of a number of the themes and topics that have been central to the class over the course of the school year, including questions of the role, responsibility, and obligation of the United States in the world.
