Tenth Grader Wins 2023 National Genealogical Society Rubincam Youth Award

Jun 6, 2023

Ted Tarter ’25 won the 2023 National Genealogical Society (NGS) Rubincam Youth Award – Senior, based upon his submission of “My Genealogical Journey: A Narrative of Risks, Sacrifices, and Adventures.” His 20-page essay tracked four generations of family history, cited with documents ranging from ship manifests to birth and death certificates, wills, deeds, and archival newspaper articles. The national competition received submissions from across the United States, as well as international American military bases. In the essay, Ted begins more than a century ago with his great-grandmother, who escaped the pogroms of Belarus and boarded a ship to America in 1920. His essay follows her courageous journey and then traces the next three generations of the Tarter family who have lived in America. Ted received this award at a special ceremony held at the National Genealogical Society’s annual convention on Wednesday, May 31 in Richmond, VA.
