Eighth Graders Pursue Service Learning Opportunities with Cathedral Kitchen

Jan 26, 2024

After a Middle School Assembly (led by Service Learning Coordinators Sonia Guzman and Rachel Kaplan with help from Middle School Service Leadership Activity students) introduced all students to the principles of Service Learning, eighth graders further explored their service learning options with a focus on food security. Alexandra Wills, from Cathedral Kitchen (CK), visited to talk to students about how CK fights food insecurity and serves the South Jersey community. She also described several ways that the class and kitchen could partner together.

During a grade level advisory period, advisors (MS Science Teacher) Tina Corsey and (MS/US Math Teacher) Liz Moore planned a service-focused theme that also celebrated MLK, Jr. Day. The class watched a video about how MLK, Jr. Day became a day of service, talked about how they can serve their communities,  and brainstormed ways they can serve CK  as a class. The class then made snowman centerpieces out of new toilet paper rolls to brighten the CK dining room, and to provide some decor that people can take with them when they leave. Lastly, eighth graders made a collaborative poster of Martin Luther King, Jr. which included ways they either serve their communities or plan to serve them.
