Upper School

Promising scholars Impacting the world

The MFS Upper School emphasizes breadth of learning, depth of mastery, and real-world application of skills. We offer 18 AP courses and honors-level courses in all major disciplines, and in every class we stress critical thinking, strong writing, quantitative reasoning skills, and attention to the moral and ethical underpinnings of intellectual inquiry. Our students have important opportunities to design their own course of study by exploring subjects of special interest in significant depth through independent research and an extraordinarily rich selection of electives.

The Upper School curriculum encourages young people not only to shape their own experiences, but also to carefully consider the needs of others. Our students complete a minimum (and in most cases many more than) 50 hours of community service, learning and serving in places ranging from Cuba to Camden, Philadelphia to Martinique, Florida to China, and much more. They graduate MFS as field-tested thinkers and engaged global citizens—entering college prepared to both “do well and do good.”

Our individualized college counseling program offers deeply personal guidance through essay workshopping, admissions advisement, optional test preparation, and support. We encourage our students to select best-fit colleges—to find cultural and curricular matches that allow them to pursue their passions, find their place, build consequential careers, and continue defining greatness on their own terms.
