Model UN Delegation (32 Strong) Makes Their Mark at UPenn Conference

Jan 30, 2024

Upper School History Teacher and Model UN Advisor Clark Thomson summarized another successful conference for Upper School Model UN students January 25-28:

“We crossed a foggy Ben Franklin Bridge into Philadelphia on Thursday; and this afternoon, we returned amidst the drizzle and mist. In between, our MUNers, 32 strong, had a wonderful conference at the 40th Ivy League Model United Nations Conference (ILMUNC) hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. There were 2,200 delegates from schools all over the world. It was extremely competitive (as ILMUNC always is), but MFS delegates made their mark in committees large and small. The often ubiquitous MUN Flu took out one of our delegates and laid this advisor low, but we soldiered onward to compromise and consensus. Those with better immune systems than I enjoyed the delegate dance to celebrate the end of formal committee work. I suspect the United Nations in New York City does not choose to mark the end of substantive work in this manner, but perhaps they should. What damage can black light, fluorescent colors, and good old thumping music do to achieving world order? Ask our delegates.”

MFS ILMUNC Award Winners:

  • Ethan Cohen ’26 and Andrew Zhou ’25 received Verbal Commendation as the delegation of Portugal in the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL)
  • Mason Levens ’25 received Verbal Commendation as Larry Page in the Joint Crisis Committee for Meta and Alphabet (JCC)
  • Ava Patel ’25 and Elina Shah ’24 earned Outstanding Delegation as South Africa on the Economic and Financial Committee (ECOFIN)
  • Maya DeAndrea ’25 and Haila Desai ’24 earned Best Delegation as South Africa on the Commision on Sustainable Development (CDS)
  • Luke Iocono ’25 earned Best Delegate as Buggle McGee on a crisis committee dealing with the gold rush.

Ali Sabir ’26 earned Honorable Mention as French Guiana in the Organization of American States (OAS).
