When developing their lesson plans, Kindergarten teachers Jenny Torgerson and Kenya Barber think about how to encourage their students’ natural curiosity. As kindergarteners explore MFS and begin to meet faculty and staff around the school, they often want to learn more.

“Both Kindergarten classes study the community,” explained Ms. Barber. “Since we are working with five- and six-year-olds, we start with our immediate community. In September, we talk about families. Then we branch out and talk about friends, followed by a look at our community within the school.”

As part of this unit, kindergarteners welcome faculty and staff to the classroom for a series of interviews and Q&As. So far, they have spoken with five visitors from a range of different departments, including College Counseling, Admissions, and Front Desk Reception. Head of School Julia de la Torre was the most recent visitor, and Arnell Palmer from Maintenance will be stopping by next.

After the visits, kindergarteners send a personalized “thank you:” “We all write a letter thanking them for coming in and describing what we learned from them,” Ms. Barber said.
