Middle School Diversity Club Lunar New Year Fundraiser Supports Philadelphia Asian Youth

Mar 1, 2023

Lunar New Year, a celebration of the first new moon of the lunar calendar and the arrival of Spring, is a major holiday celebrated throughout Asia. Millions across the world travel to reunite with family, honor ancestors, and welcome prosperity and good fortune for the new year. Led by Middle School Diversity Co-Clerks Emmie Huynh ‘27 and Jade Montenegro ‘27 and MS Diversity Coordinator Dan So-Schoos, the MS Diversity Club worked together for two months to organize a Lunar New Year fundraiser for Middle School students, focusing on the Quaker testimonies of equity, stewardship, and community throughout the process. The club sold red envelopes filled with sweet treats normally eaten during Lunar New Year, with proceeds donated to the Philadelphia Suns, a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia’s Chinatown whose mission focuses on providing athletic, cultural, and educational opportunities for Asian youth. The Middle School Diversity Club’s good work and success is a representation of the strong student voice here at MFS and is a great example of how MFS fosters diversity and inclusivity.
