WordsWorth Members Win Garden State Press Association Awards

The WordsWorth staff had great success in the 2022-23 Garden State Press Association Awards, announced earlier this year.

Berra Deryal ’26 and Livia Kam ’26 won Second Place in Feature Writing for their story “Turkish Survivor Shares Story of Earthquake.”

Ali Benjamin ’23 and Aadit Pande ’23 won Second Place in Sports Writing for their story “Why Not Us?”

Charlotte Nesevich ’25 won Seventh Place in News Writing for her story “Cuban Musicians and Green Crayons: The Published Books of Two Teachers at MFS.”

The team of Michael Huettl ’24, Dinah Megibow-Taylor ’24, Alicia Leung ’24, and Elina Shah ’24 won Second Place in Editorial Writing (Unsigned) for their story “The NFL Injury Epidemic: Player Health Needs to Be a Priority.”

In the Personal Narrative category, Charlie Beetham ’24 won Second Place for his piece “Journey to Empathy: A First Person Point-of-View of the Give Kids The World Intensive Learning Experience.” Dinah Megibow-Taylor won Fourth Place for “The Infamous Junior Year” and Fifth Place for another piece titled “Happy 3rd Anniversary, World!”

Charlie also received Second Place in the Breaking News Category for his piece “Smoke and No Mirrors: Final Few Days of School Impacted by Smoke from Canadian Wildfires.

Alicia Leung ’24 won Sixth Place in Column Writing for her science column which included:Debunk: Turkey Doesn’t Solely Cause Your Thanksgiving Food Coma,” “The Burnout Epidemic: What Happens When It’s All Too Much?” and “All About Good Cholesterol.”

She also captured Eighth Place in Review Writing for her piece “Welcome to the Dark Era: War Erupts in My Hero Academia.”

In Photography, Michael Huettl came in First Place for his photo “Seniors react to the judge’s call during the annual Spirit Week Jell-O Eating competition,” Dinah Megibow-Taylor won Third Place with “The Seniors celebrate their win in the Slimy Fish Toss event, a Spirit Week staple,” and Charlotte Nesevich came in Fourth Place for “Seniors celebrate at the end of their Air Band performance.” Michael Huettl and Vikram Verma additionally won First Place for their Photo Gallery “Spirit Week 2022: Jell-O Eating Contest.”

The team of Ali Benjamin, Luke Iacono ’25, Livia Kam, Sophia Lalani ’25, Amir Mashaqi ’23, Dinah Megibow-Taylor, and Julia Tourtellotte ’23 won First Place in Multimedia Package: Features for their feature Stokes Hall Timeline Removed in Light of Confederate Imagery: An In-Depth Report,” and Charlotte Nesevich received Third Place for “Saying Goodbye to the Seniors: Commencement Ceremonies for the Class of 2023.”

Finally, in the Podcast category, Charlotte Nesevich, Jack Cranmer ’25, and Gabe Harvey ’25 won First Place for their Podcast “Foxes Talk Football.”
